Stonewall Revolutionaries Graphic Novel
“Stonewall Revolutionaries” is a digitally illustrated nonfiction graphic novel about the Stonewall Inn riots, centering on the activism of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, two often-overlooked figures in LGBTQ+ history. The narrative moves between past and present, framed by contemporary news about a monument proposal honoring Johnson and connecting the story to its continued recognition today.
Illustrating architectural environments was not a strength of mine before beginning this project, which prompted me to step outside my comfort zone while developing the visual narrative. I used bright, saturated colors inspired by the vibrancy surrounding figures like Marsha P. Johnson, to reflect the passion and urgency of transgender rights protests during the 1960s and 70s, contrasted with a muted blue contemporary setting to separate the historical scenes from the present.
